Simplified Assessment of Ship Impact on Navigation Lock Gates

چکیده
This paper presents a simplified methodology for treating collisions of ships with lock gates. The goal is to obtain a good approximation of the law relating the resistance of the gate and the penetration of the striking vessel. To do so, we assume that the initial kinetic energy of the ship is dissipated by deforming the structure. As a first step, deformations are assumed to take place in localized regions. However, for larger indentations, a global bending mode is postulated on the entire gate. The first part of the article is devoted to a brief presentation of the basic law relating and under the hypothesis of a local deforming mode. In the second part, we shortly expose the way for dealing with the global bending mode. Finally, the last section presents a comparison between numerical results obtained by finite element analyses and those derived by our simplified methodology. A quite good accordance is found between the two approaches.

Simplified Analytical Method for Estimating the Resistance of Lock Gates to Ship Impacts
The present paper is concerned with the design of lock gates submitted to ship impacts. In this paper, a simplified analytical method is presented to evaluate the resistance of such structures under collision. The basic idea is to assume that the resistance is first provided through a local deforming mode, corresponding to a localized crushing of some impacted structural elements. For consecuti...

Preliminary communication Automation of navigation at sea has partly been provided for with the use of integrated navigation bridge − INB. The functioning of INB is supervised by the officer who also takes the final decision during navigation. The complete automation of navigation can be improved by upgrading the existing equipment on board modern ships. To provide for automation of inland navi...
متن کاملUsing Condition Index Inspection Results to Update the Reliability of Miter Gates for Navigation Locks
In an effort to ensure public safety, many civil engineering structures undergo various inspections to assess their condition or performance. Comprehensive procedures for using routine inspection data to update reliability assessments have not been developed. This paper illustrates how the Condition Index inspection data from a specific miter gate on a Corps of Engineers navigation lock can be ...
متن کاملSquat Assessment for Safe Navigation of River Nile Cruisers
In recent years a great deal of research efforts in ship hydromechanics have been devoted to practical navigation problems in moving larger ships safely into existing harbors and inland waterways. An area of particular concern is the prediction of ship squat in shallow or restricted waters at different speeds. Squat may cause grounding of the ship which result in severe damage to the ship, and ...
متن کاملToward Real-Time Visually Augmented Navigation for Autonomous Search and Inspection of Ship Hulls and Port Facilities
This paper reports on current research to automate the task of ship hull inspection and search using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). We describe an automated feature-based navigation (FBN) and mapping framework that provides the AUV with precise in-situ hull-relative localization. Our vision-based perception approach eliminates the need for having to deploy additional navigation infrastr...
